What the Vulcan Society has done to help you become a NYC firefighter.

You have become a member of FDNY because you deserve to be one. However, if you are a person of color, there is little chance the Vulcan Society's efforts did not help you attain this great career. Did you hear about this job through FDNY recruiters, the radio, etc.? Before our political, media and legal activism, there was almost no chance that would have happened because FDNY's outreach efforts in the Black community were almost non-existent.

Did you receive 5 extra points for being a NYC resident? We insured that those points only went to actual residents thereby preventing thousands of potential cheaters from illegally jumping ahead of you on the eligible list. Did you come to our tutoring classes for the entrance exam, or our pre academy classes at Vulcan Hall or our workouts in the park? Also, because of our successful federal lawsuit, you took a fair entrance exam that  measured your potential to be a good firefighter - not something else. That lawsuit also assured that more than 200 Black and Hispanic priority hires from the 1999 and 2002 tests got onto the job.

As you are probably aware, people of color have never come onto this job in any appreciable numbers until now. The Vulcan Society and
the Vulcan Society alone kicked open the door you have recently walked through.

Study groups for promotional tests. These groups are second to none. Most Black officers in the field today and in FDNY history have come through these groups.
Membership in the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters.
Discounted rental of Vulcan Hall, and much more.

How To Become A Member
To become a member, you must fill out an application at a meeting where you will be introduced to the members. At a subsequent meeting you attend, the membership will be given the opportunity to accept or reject your application.

Regular membership meetings are the first and third Mondays of every month except July and August. Also, there is no meeting the first Monday of September (labor day). We meet in Brooklyn at Vulcan Hall, located at 739 Eastern Parkway, between Brooklyn Ave. and Kingston Ave. at 8pm.

All members must pay yearly dues. We have an optional "dues checkoff " system with the Municipal Credit Union where your dues can be automatically taken out of your salary if you have an MCU account.
