It is a honor and a privilege to announce that Retired NYFD Lt. Ormond Smith received the 2017 IABPFF Medal of Honor Award  at the honorary dinner Saturday May 20th 2017th in New Brunswick NJ.
Ormond Smith was born in Brooklyn New York in 1924.  He attended the New York School System and served his country in the United States Navy in World War II.  Ormond was appointed to the Fire Department of New York in 1951 to Engine 230 and was promoted to Lieutenant in April of 1963.  Ormond has been a proud long serving member of the Vulcan Society.  He served on the Executive board as 2nd Vice President and served on the Board of Trustees.  He also served as Chairman of the Vulcan Hall Foundation from 2002-2016.  Ormond is a very active member of the International Association of Black professional firefighters (IABPFF) and has a long standing attendance at meetings with the regional and international association.  Ormond's dedication to the success of the Vulcan Society and the IABPFF has always been near and dear to his heart.  He has been a mentor to both active and retired members of the FDNY and other department around the country.  His leadership and activism is constant and unyielding.  Ormond retired from Engine 279 in November of 1989.
Today Ormond still serves the community by serving at this church and in the soup kitchen giving away food to the underprivileged.
